Armando Papais

My father worked long and hard days in the construction business. Specifically, the cement road construction. He was an avid gardener and every year he would trim back his grapes for a new harvest. Eventually, he made a nice patio where he would trained the vines to make a shady canopy over where he could sit and enjoy the newspaper.

He grew all kinds of vegetables in his garden; potatoes, tomatoes, beans, lettuce, corn, peppers, cucumbers and sunflowers. He also grew a peach tree, and cherished every peach. He schemed many ways to scare off the birds so they wouldn’t poke holes in them trying to suck at the fruit juices before they were ripe. Every year I would help him move his oleander outside in the Spring, then back inside before the first frost would come in the Fall.
